Oregon State Construction Contractors Board

Robert Rambo with the Oregon State Construction Contractors Board will be introducing us to his agency. He is the manager of the Field Investigation Section. The Construction Contractors Board was created in 1971 as the Builders Board and is responsible for safeguarding the security and property of the citizens of Oregon by preventing and resolving construction contracting problems and by insuring contractors' compliance with the law.
The board administers the Oregon Contractors Law that provides for licensing of residential and commercial construction contractors, subcontractors and home inspectors; investigation and adjudication of complaints filed against licensees; and assessment of sanctions against unlawful contractors.
The board tests applicants on a 16-hour course in construction laws and business practices. The board also engages in education activities aimed at preventing construction problems, resolving disputes and promoting a competitive business environment.” They also provide a number of programs, including dispute resolution, enforcement, licensing, and education to both contractor and consumer.

Federal Emergency Management Agency

Chief of Floodplain Management and Insurance Branch Mark Riebau will be presenting a half day workshop called NFIP 101. He will be joined by Christine Shirley, NFIP Coordinator for the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development. This half-day workshop will provide basic information about the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the respective roll of federal, state and local governments. The workshop will provide a brief history of the program and a look to the future as Oregon communities may be affected by the ongoing consultation between FEMA and the National Marine Fisheries Service regarding the Endangered Species Act and the NIFP. The relationship between the NFIP, local land development ordinances, and Oregon building codes will be discussed. Specific examples of common NFIP violations will be presented.

Poverty and domestic violence are a growing problem in America and within every region of the State of Oregon. Learn how it impacts our communities and the work that we do with families. Let’s have a conversation about poverty and domestic violence - how widespread it has become and how it can directly affect your work and successes out in the field.
Carri Ramsey-Smith is a Community Development Coordinator with the Oregon Department of Human Services and a State Certified Prevention Specialist. She has a Community Health degree from Oregon State University and 27 years of experience in working with families impacted by poverty, addictions, domestic violence and other various social service issues.

Minimize Conflict and Maximize Results

We are saving the best for last! Our very own Jay Irvin with Hillsboro Police Department will be presenting “Minimize Conflict and Maximize Results”. Conflict comes in all shapes and sizes, and as long as two or more people work together, conflict will never go away. If we don’t learn to master the art of minimizing conflict, we hurt productivity. The ideas at this workshop can be life changing. You’ll learn how to:
      • Gain more cooperation from others
      • Strengthen workplace relationships
      • Enjoy your job more
      • Be more productive
      • Decrease your stress
      • Earn more respect of everyone you work with
      • Identify and eliminate the causes of personality conflicts before they arise

The approach is to understand the cause of conflict, knowing, that if we really understand the causes of conflict, we can diffuse conflict before it becomes destructive. We’ll look at:
      • Social styles typing
      • Mitigating/managing anger
      • Understanding the roles of learning styles in conflict prevention
      • Practical tips on how to stay on task when conflicts arise
